California State University, Fresno public relations students are campaigning for food and cash donations and trying to raise awareness in the campus community for the Salvation Army’s mission with a “iCAN, youCAN, weCAN Fight Hunger” theme April 11-17.

In addition to activities on campus throughout the week, the campaign also has a cell phone text-donation component so anyone on or off campus can text “ICAN” to 80888 to automatically donate $5 to the Salvation Army.

The campaign was designed and implemented by students in Mass Communication and Journalism 159, the “Public Relations Cases & Campaigns” class.

The students will set up tables in the campus Free Speech Area with prizes, local bands and radio station live remote broadcasts 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, April 11, to Thursday, April 14, Money and canned food will be collected in Salvation Army kettles and barrels on campus and a can sculpture will be built on the ground floor of the Henry Madden Library from donated cans.

Students will staff a booth at Vintage Days Friday, April 15, to Sunday, April 17, and collect money at Fresno State baseball and softball games April 15 and 16.

Eighteen Fresno State academic departments are competing against each other to collect the most food and money for the Salvation Army. The university residence halls also are competing. Several sororities contributed to the campaign by collecting either canned food or money in April.
