Character education conference April 8

A prominent speaker, awards to exemplary local schools and workshops on professional ethics and decision-making are part of the 27th annual Conference on Character and Civic Education sponsored by California State University, Fresno’s Kremen School of Education and Human Development.

The all-day conference, which begins at 8 a.m. Friday, April 8, at the Fresno Convention Center’s Exhibit Hall (M and Inyo streets), is the longest-running character education conference in the United States.

It is intended to provide Fresno State and Fresno Pacific University student teachers with an understanding of the ethical implications of teaching and reinforcement about their role in their students’ character development.

Dr. Marvin Berkowitz of the Sanford N. McDonnell Professor of Character Education at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, will speak at 8:20 a.m. He is a frequently quoted expert on character education.

Another conference highlight – also at the opening session – is presentation of Fresno State’s Bonner Center for Character Education Virtues and Character Recognition Awards to 12 central San Joaquin Valley middle schools.

This year’s awardees are Edison Computech 7-8, Kings Canyon, Scandinavian, Sequoia, Tehipite, Tioga and Wawona I.B. World in the Fresno Unified School District; Green Acres in Visalia Unified; Live Oak, Los Tules and Alice G. Mulcahy in Tulare City; and Rafer Johnson in the Kingsburg Elementary Charter School District.
