Sully’s Court: The first weekend

The tip-off: Observations on the first full weekend of competition. Big bully: Kansas State looked strong, fast and tough in beating James Madison, 75-61. Jacob Pullen scored 20 points, playing smart and under control. I was really impressed. That being said, James Madison will be a factor in the Colonial Athletic Association race.

Good as new: Michigan State point guard Kalin Lucas played his first game after rupturing his Achilles’ tendon, and it was a good one. The AP story stated he was in midseason form and he scored 18 points. The food chain: Not sure you can have a larger gap in opponents than Stony Brook did. The Seawolves opened with a 79-52 loss to UConn Friday but the rebounded to beat Mount Ida, 80-43, Sunday. Sorry I missed it: Morgan State 81, Loyola Marymount 79, big win on the road for the Bears. DeWayne Jackson hit seven 3-pointers.

Believe the hype? Here’s a look at the performances of some of the nation’s most highly-touted freshmen.

  • Jared Sullinger, Ohio States big recruit, opened with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Another Buckeye freshman, Deshaun Thomas, came off the bench to scored 24 points.
  • Preseason first-team All-American Harrison Barnes had 14 points as North Carolina beat Lipscomb.
  • Turkish big man Enes Kanter has been ruled ineligible because hes already been paid to play, but the rest of Kentucky’s freshman class was tremendous against East Tennessee. Terence Jones, a 6-foot-9-inch forward, had 25 points and 12 rebounds; Doron Lamb had 20 points and point guard Brandon Knight, who’s supposed to be the next John Wall, had 17 points and five assists.
  • Tobias Harris, Tennessees touted recruit, had 18 points. Coach Bruce Pearl told reporters he needs to get him more shots.
  • NC State is relying on freshmen and got a good start in a victory over Tennessee Tech with C.J. Leslie scoring 21 and Ryan Harrow 18.
  • Kyrie Irving, Duke’s first freshman point guard to start since Jason Williams in 1999, had 17 points as the Blue Devils beat Princeton easily.
  • Kansas’s freshman point guard, Josh Selby, didnt play as the school deals with clearinghouse eligibility issues.

Surprising scores, amazing margins: Gardner-Webb 78, Charlotte 70: The 49ers were playing without Shamari Spears and AnJuan Wilderness, both suspended for violating team rules.

Virginia 76, William & Mary 52: Wouldnt have thought the Cavaliers were capable of this. Freshman Billy Baron, son of Rhode Island coach Jim Baron, led the Cavs with 19. His older brother Jimmy played for his dad. I guess Billy is out of the will.

Wagner 63, Lafayette 58: A subtle upset but also a win on opening night for first-year coach Danny Hurley, son of legendary New Jersey high school coach Bob Hurley. His brother, Bobby, of course, was a star point guard for Duke.

Xavier 68, Western Michigan 65: An unexpected struggle at home for X, which trailed by 11 at the half.

Georgia 72, Mississippi Valley 70: Trailing most of the second half, the Bulldogs were lucky to get away.

Austin Peay 64, Saint Louis 64: The Billikins are missing two suspended starters and this is the result. All-Sully Kyle Cassity had 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Canisius 80, St. Bonaventure 70: The Bonnies are still running uphill. This was a road game but I thought they were past losing games like this.

UNC Asheville 70, Auburn 69: A new coach (former UMass star Tony Barbee), new $86 million arena, and then this. Thats why Auburn is a football school. Or maybe everyone was preoccupied with Cam Newton.

Maine 71, Utah Valley State 66: This is a great start in what could be a big season in Orono as the Bears traveled 2,500 miles and won in overtime. Too bad the Bears couldn’t put much of a fight against Maryland Sunday, losing 89-59.

Pacific 66, UTEP 61: Wow. Tim Floyd loses his opener at home. He needs another O.J. Mayo (OK, maybe not).

West Liberty 154, Lock Haven 48: Lock Haven would win in wrestling. This is not a Division 2 record for margin of victory. Mississippi College beat Dallas Bible by 118 in 1971.

Bryant 74, Iona 72: A big win for a team that was 1-29 last season.

Indiana 67, Wright St. 44: This is how Indiana used to win games like this. It hasn’t been that way for awhile.

Wisconsin 99, Prairie View 55: Good to see the Badgers basketball team can outscore its football team.

South Dakota State 79, Iowa 69: It’s going to take Fran McCaffery a little while to get things going in Iowa City.
