Weddle earns MVP in VHSCA game
Patrick Henry’s Kelsey Weddle pitched three hitless innings and also had a RBI double Thursday morning at the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game in Newport News.
The West dropped a 6-4 decision to the East in the annual event.
Weddle started in the circle for the West and struck out five. She also accounted for the West’s first run to earn MVP honors.
Iesha Mountain reached on a bunt single and stole two bases, while Faith Ritchie reached via walk and had a putout in the loss.
Megan Robinson and Erica Gilliam also played in the game, but neither reached base.

Hughes, Daniels lead locals in VHSCA
Gate City’s Wes Hughes and J.I. Burton’s Caleb Daniels each had a hit, leading the local contingent for the West squad during Wednesday’s Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game at War Memorial Field in Hampton, Va.
The East collected a 7-5 victory in the game that was marred by a long rain delay.
Hughes went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored. He also pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing one run on one hit. He struck out one and walked one.
Daniels went 1-for-2, collecting the West’s first hit of the game. He also pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing one run and striking out two.
Virginia High’s Clint Chafin , Richlands’ Bradley Strong , Chilhowie’s Scott Pennington and Tazewell’s Mike Wood also competed in the event.
Strong turned two double plays from his shortstop position.
Shawn Morimando of Ocean Lakes homered and was the East MVP, while Tunstall’s Shawn Clowers earned MVP honors for the West.

‘Battle of the Boot’ retired
South-West Insurance Agency announced on Thursday that the “Battle of the Boot” trophy, presented annually to the winner of the Powell Valley-Lee High football game, is being retired. The Boot trophy, a bronzed football shoe, was presented since 1989.
South-West Insurance will continue its support of the first meeting between Union High School – the consolidated school of Powell Valley and Appalachia – and the Lee High Generals. Those teams open the season Aug. 26 at Lee. A formal announcement of the new traveling trophy for that rivalry will be made in August.

East sweeps VHSCA All-Star games
The East won both the girls and boys matches at Wednesday’s Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Games at Christopher Newport University.
In the boys game, Jamestown’s Patrick O’Brien scored three goals as the East earned a 5-2 win over the West. Devin Jones and Christian Burton accounted for the West’s goals. Matt Fleenor was a member of the West squad.
In the girls game, Jessie Klamut scored the game-winner with 19 minutes left as the East eked out a 3-2 victory over the West.

Roark to compete in truck race
Abingdon’s Caleb Roark will attempt to make his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start this weekend at the event in Iowa.
He will be driving the No.07 Chevrolet Silverado owned by Jeff Roark Motorsports and fielded in alliance with SS Green Light Racing of Mooresville, N.C. In Roark’s only previous truck start, in April of this year at Martinsville Speedway), he finished on the lead lap in 19th position.
Caleb’s next scheduled start will be at Bristol Motor Speedway next month.
GOLF
King’s Kibsey playing in Canadian tourney
Rising King College senior Adrian Kibsey shot a 3-over 74 Thursday in the first round of the Canadian Professional Golf Tour’s Players Cup tournament after earning one of four spots in the event by shooting a 72 in a 30-player qualification tournament on Monday.
Kibsey’s first-round performance left him in a tie for 78th in the 154-player field.
As a transfer student from Warner University, the 2010-11 season was Kibsey’s first with King’s golf team. During the fall season, Kibsey led the team in scoring average. Before the start of the spring season, he sustained a wrist injury and was unable to play the remainder of the season.
The Players Cup will continue through Sunday.
