Cam Newton is the front runner to win the Heisman Trophy this season. With good reason. The Auburn quarterback is the best player in college football right now.
But don’t take it to the house yet that Newton will be the winner when the announcement is made next month. Newton is also in the middle of a swirl of rumors about whether he was offered money to go to Mississippi State, which recruited him heavily when he came out of Blinn Jr. College last winter. Or that Auburn also ponied up some cash, which Auburn officials emphatically deny.
Newton also reportedly had some problems at the University of Florida, where he started his collegiate career, including possession of a stolen computer. What does all of this have to do with the Heisman Trophy? Good question. Before Reggie Bush’s problems the answer would be simple: nothing. But Bush gave back his Heisman after the NCAA came down hard on USC for extra benefits provided for Bush’s family while Bush was playing at USC.
So now voters are hedging their bets on Newton, waiting to see if something more unfolds in the next few weeks.
But here’s our take. O.J. Simpson still has his Heisman. And we feel Reggie Bush should still have his. Unless it is proven that Newton actually did take cash to play for Auburn, we will base our Heisman votes based on what he does in his next few games against Georgia, Alabama and presumably against Florida or South Carolina in the SEC title game.
